I'm very pleased to announce that Associate Professor of Psychology Kathryn Becker-Blease has accepted the position as director of the School of Psychological Sciences, which she will begin this week. She takes over for John Edwards, who has served over the past ten years first as chair, then as transitional director and finally, since 2013, as director--a series of positions that reflect the program’s transition from a department to a school. John’s psychology colleagues and everyone in CLA owe him an enormous debt of gratitude. During his tenure, his unit has more than doubled the size of its tenure track faculty and now has over 30 faculty who serve more than 1,000 majors. Under his leadership, psychology created and implemented a new PhD program (focusing on engineering psychology, health psychology, and applied cognition) and established a one-of-a-kind Contemplative Studies Institute.
Kathy earned her PhD at University of Oregon and arrived at OSU in 2009. She has published extensively on trauma in childhood and emerging adulthood, as well as on the ethics and best practices of teaching on that subject. Her collaborative applied research is especially known for its real-world applications and for its deep level of engagement with campus and community partners. She also serves as OSU’s program lead in psychology for a $515,000 grant from Association of Public Land Grant Universities (APLU) to support accelerated adoption of adaptive courseware and personalized learning systems in undergraduate courses.
Join me in welcoming Kathy on board as a valued CLA leader.
