Accretions BannerAccretions: New Work by Andrew Myers

July 17 - August 9, 2017

Opening Reception Thursday, July 20, 4 - 8 p.m.

Andrew Myers is an Oregon artist whose studio practice in drawing and printmaking is incorporated with elements of installation and sculpture. His work has been showcased in Art in America, the Portland Modern, Portlandart.net, Creative Quarterly, and more. Myers is part of the viewing program at the Drawing Center in New York City. He was recipient of a Career Opportunity Grant from the Oregon Arts Commission and the Ford Family Foundation to travel, create work in residence and install an exhibition in the Slovak Republic (July 2016) and has received a Ford Family Foundation sponsored residency at Playa for this August.

Myers’ large scale work for Accretions interacts with the exhibition space and engages the viewer by becoming part of the environment. Integral to Myers’ work is the handmade mark and the physical evidence and visual history of the artist’s hand. The concepts of place and home, conservation and preservation of wild places and creatures are themes that permeate the work.

The theme of extinction also weighs heavily in Accretions. Myers uses mixed media drawings to explore the themes on modular assembled surfaces. Prehistoric animals, endangered and threatened species and the human figure are combined in amalgamated forms on layered surfaces.
