Mike Gao is a music technologist, DJ, and producer. He holds a B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California, an M.A. in computer music from Stanford University, and is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the University of California, San Diego. He is also a researcher for the leading music technology company, Native Instruments.
Gao has independently created two mobile applications to aid music production: Vocal Beater, an application that recognizes vocal percussion "beat box" sounds and converts them to drum patterns that can be loaded by sequencers, and an iPad application for composing and teaching harmony with shapes and colors.
As a producer, he has won first place in several beat battles at such places as Project Blowed in Los Angeles, and the Mighty 4 in the Bay Area. Notable performances include Low End Theory, Boiler Room, Outlook Festival 2012 (Croatia), Satta Outside Festival (Lithuania), Reykjavik Arts Festival (Iceland), Big Chill Festival (UK), and Mac World. His work has been featured on Wired, MTV Iggy, XLR8R, Creators Project, DJ Tech Tools, and Audrey Magazine.
