Dear SWLF Community:

A host of new initiatives in the School of Writing, Literature, and Film can be constellated under one heading: increasing points of access for students. We aim to teach a wider variety of material and methodologies; to map multiple entry points to our programs; and to expand internships, research opportunities, and career development, connecting our graduates more quickly and more deeply with the world beyond OSU. "There is no such thing as a world without story." - Peter Betjemann, Director of the School of Writing, Literature, and Film

Now Playing: SWLF at The Darkside

by Jillian St. Jacques

Proprietor Paul Turner and the SWLF collaborate on bringing film classes to a whole new venue

You won’t find 12 screening rooms with enormous foamy chairs and seat-cup holders straight out of Wall-E. And you won’t be choosing from a roster of Hollywood blockbusters like Boss Baby and The Lost City of Z, or striding across acres of off-gassing carpet with patterns reminiscent of The Shining. You won’t stick your straw into a plastic chalice of Coca-Cola products starting at $5.09, or dabble your fingers in a bag of industrial popcorn for $7. And the cost of your ticket won’t come buzzing in at $10.50. Read more.

SWLF Students Travel the World

By Adelaide Fitzgerald

Studying abroad is an incredible way to explore different parts of the world and enrich your education. SWLF faculty lead study abroad programs to places like Great Britain, Cuba and Greece. Whether through those programs or others, many SWLF students find ways to work and study abroad. As an English major who recently completed a summer session in Querétaro, Mexico, I’m one of them. If the walls of Moreland Hall could talk, they would have decades of stories to tell. Located at the heart of Oregon State University’s campus, Moreland Hall celebrates its Centennial this year. Built in September of 1917 and originally opened as the home of the College of Forestry, the building underwent a remodel in in 1973 and reopened as Moreland Hall and the home of the English Department. The People of Moreland Hall, inspired by Humans of New York, seeks to capture past, present, and future influence of Moreland Hall and School of Writing, Literature, and Film and lets students tell their stories. Check out Lanesha Reagan's story below:
“It wasn’t a piece, it was a person who sparked an interest in writing. It was my 8th grade Language Arts teacher, Carrie Scaife. She gave us a wide breadth of writing and taught it so passionately. She gave us room to grow as writers while encouraging us to grow in writing itself.”

The 2017 MA/MFA Cohort

Our newest cohort of graduate students come to us from all over—Alaska to Costa Rica, Japan to Nashville. We’re welcoming a Fulbright Teaching Assistantship recipient, a sommelier, a founding artistic director for a Shakespeare Company, a rock climber who recently scaled Smith Rock, a rock-n-roll stylist to the stars, and a number of editors at academic and literary magazines. Our MFA program continues to be the most competitive graduate program at OSU and our MA program brings in top scholars with impeccable records year after year.
Congratulations!

Associate Professor Megan Ward recently won the Bill and Caroline Wilkins Faculty Development Ward.

Megan Ward has co-edited a digital critical edition of David Livingstone’s final manuscripts (1866-73) with Adrian S. Wisnicki at Livingstone Online (www.livingstoneonline.org). Her new book Human Reproductions: Victorian Realist Character and Artificial Intelligence, will be published by Ohio State University Press in 2018.
