Corvallis is a small city with lots of Northwest charm. Beyond our beautiful and historic campus, the city of Corvallis thrives in its culture and community, and is continually ranked one of the safest cities in America. Our downtown, which sits along the Willamette River, includes locally-owned coffee shops, bookstores, boutiques, antique stores, a twice-weekly farmers market, and a crop of fine new restaurants featuring the best of Oregon’s local cuisine. We often finish our weekly workshop by heading to one of the eateries downtown.
Getting around Corvallis is easy. Some graduate students choose to bring vehicles; however, Corvallis is a very bike- and pedestrian-friendly city. Corvallis also boasts public bus system that’s free for OSU students.
Portland is under 2 hours away, and Eugene and the coast are both less than one hour’s drive away. Weekend daytrips and getaways include hiking, camping, wine tasting, brewery tours, and local farms. These activities are available within Corvallis itself and all through the Willamette Valley.
MFA students have the opportunity to participate in outreach to the Corvallis community. Students may participate in afterschool reading and writing programs for at-risk youth, mentor college applicants with their personal statements, or work/intern for local newspapers and literary publications.
