Sindya Bhanoo is the author of the story collection Seeking Fortune Elsewhere (Catapult). The book is a finalist for the New American Voices Award. Her fiction has appeared in GrantaNew England ReviewGlimmer Train, and elsewhere. She is the recipient of an O. Henry Award, the Disquiet Literary Prize, an Elizabeth George Foundation grant, and scholarships from the Bread Loaf and Sewanee writers conferences. 

A longtime newspaper reporter, she has worked for The New York Times and The Washington Post, where she is still a contributor. She was a Knight-Wallace Reporting Fellow at the University of Michigan in 2020.

Her reporting has received support and recognition from numerous organizations, including the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, The New York Press Club, the Metcalf Institute for Marine and Environmental Reporting, Kaiser Family Foundation and the Knight Science Journalism Program at MIT. 

Sindya is a graduate of the Michener Center for Writers, UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism, and Carnegie Mellon University.
