Dr. Tung Nguyen is an award-winning pianist, educator, and scholar whose work bridges performance, pedagogy, and research. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance with specialization in Piano Pedagogy and Historical Performance Practice; a Master’s in Collaborative Piano from the University of Oregon, as well as a Master’s and Bachelor’s in Piano Performance at the Liszt Academy in Budapest, Hungary. With over ten years of professional performance experience and five years of collegiate teaching experience, his artistry is distinguished by his dedication to standard, early, and contemporary repertoire, fostering musical excellence in his students and collaborations.
Tung has received top prizes in national and international piano competitions, including the MTNA, Barletta International Music, Amadeus International, and Vancouver International Music Competitions. He has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician with orchestras such as the Oregon Bach Festival Orchestra, Eugene Symphony, Oregon Bach Collegium, Oregon Mozart Players, and Orchestra NEXT, as well as in international festivals and concert series. He has recorded and published with Naxos Records in a CD exploring lesser-known works by W.A. Mozart, and he recently served as producer for the complete piano works of American composer George Walker. As a founding member of Trio JET in Hungary and Collier Trio in Oregon, he has explored both historical performance and contemporary chamber music in concerts in Europe and Oregon. Tung recently joins the Oasis Ensemble as their new pianist, exploring repertoire for Flute-Cello-Piano with a full concert tour in the ensemble’s 2025-2026 season.
As an educator, Tung has taught at Oregon State University and the University of Oregon, where he instructed applied and collaborative piano, keyboard skills, chamber music, and theory. His teaching philosophy integrates diverse musical traditions and interdisciplinary approaches, preparing students for success in both performance and scholarship. His research focuses on the intersection of music, cultural representation, and pedagogy. He has presented at conferences and workshops in the US, Canada, and Vietnam, including the Oregon Music Teachers Association, American Musicological Society – Pacific Northwest Chapter, Western Early Keyboard Association, and the American Musical Instrument Society.
Beyond performance and academia, Tung is a dedicated leader in the musical community. As President of the MTNA Collegiate Chapter at the University of Oregon from 2022 to 2024, he expanded outreach initiatives and curated masterclasses for young musicians. He has also served as an adjudicator for international competitions, including the Piano UO Festival and the EV-Stellar Singing and Piano Competition in London, United Kingdom.
Tung received his musical training at the Vietnam National Academy of Music in Hanoi with Prof. Nguyen Thi Lan and Tran Ngoc Bich. He was awarded the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship from the Vietnamese and Hungarian governments to study piano at the Liszt Academy in Hungary in 2013 and 2018 with Profs. Gábor Farkas, Dávíd Báll, and László Borbély. In 2020, Tung was awarded the Graduate Assistantship in Piano at the University of Oregon. His main teachers in Oregon are Dr. Alexandre Dossin, Dr. David Riley, and Dr. Grace Ho.
