Slavic Soul Party!, the Brooklyn-based American Balkan brass band brings their unique, Roma-klezmer-funk-jazz-influenced sound to the West Coast. The band has released seven full-length albums and has toured the world, performing in venues ranging from Serbian schoolyards to Carnegie Hall. They have appeared at numerous music festivals, and opened for such acts as Arcade Fire and Dresden Dolls. The band's weekly Tuesday night gig at the Park Slope bar Barbès has become a popular destination for music fans from around the world, and was described by the New York Times as "delivering a great time."
“Anytime musicians study traditions deeply, and then free themselves to follow their own whims, it’s a beautiful thing. But when it comes to the brass band fusion of Slavic Soul Party! that’s just the beginning. With razor-sharp precision, juggernaut force, and a healthy dose of playfulness, these guys start out in overdrive and never let up… Slavic Soul Party! offers a gut punch to preconceptions about traditional music, world music, pop music, dance music, but I’ll tell you, this is one gut punch you’ll enjoy.”
—Banning Eyre, NPR’s All Things Considered
“One of our all time favorite NYC bands”
—National Geographic Music
“…terrifying, exhausting and way more aggressive than a lot of punk music I’ve seen.”
—Sufjan Stevens, Rolling Stone
“[Slavic Soul Party! is] one of the few that can balance its manic energy and irreverent spirit with a deep understanding of eastern European folk forms and the chops to play them.”
—Peter Margasak, Chicago Reader
Since its inception SSP! has roused crowds in Serbia, Macedonia, and Turkey, won over Warped Tour skatepunks and BBC commentators, and dazzled everyone from Saban Bajramovic to Sufjan Stevens. The group’s residency at Barbès — a small, seminal nightclub in Brooklyn — has become a gathering for international musicians and the nexus of East Coast gypsy punk, not because SSP! is comprised of scenesters, but because the band is undeniably world class…
