Where are you from?

I am from Scappoose, Oregon, a smaller town North of Portland.

What drew you to political science and writing as your fields of interest?

What drew me to political science was that I could look at law scripture, such as investigating constitutional amendments and getting to see the deliberation of how decisions were made. Getting to ask and answer the hard questions, and see how court proceedings work as well, is something that has intrigued me since the beginning. I have always found the law to be super intriguing. Writing has also been a passion of mine, and getting to continue to study it and apply it to my major has been super exciting.

What has been your experience as a student of both the College of Liberal Arts and the Honors College?

I have been able to take some really fun colloquial classes, such as my costuming superheroes class, that I wouldn’t have taken otherwise, I have also gotten access to a lot of cool opportunities I would not have otherwise been able to do. Such as the internship I just got thanks to a sociology class I recently took. The internship is with the local police department and I will be working with people who are on parole to aid them with access to basic needs and help reintroduce them to living outside of prison.

Have you started your honors thesis? If yes, what’s the topic and/or focus of your research? If not, are you considering any ideas so far?

I haven’t officially started it, but I have narrowed it down to wanting to look into prison systems and the people living in them. I would love to work with youth specifically, but I need to nail down my idea and who I want my mentor to be for this process.

What have been some of your favorite classes taken?

One of my favorite classes has been Intro to Media. The teacher was awesome and I had an amazing time with all of the projects and assignments we did. We even got to tour Orange Media Network’s headquarters and look at all the different processes happening up there.

What are you hoping to do after you graduate?

After I graduate, I would really like to go to law school and get my J.D., then, hopefully get a position within a district attorney’s office or maybe even open my own firm. I would like to focus on family law or criminal law specifically, as those have the most interest to me.

How do you feel that your experience in CLA and HC is setting you up for success?

Honestly, HC is setting me up to be able to handle the harder research questions and routine that I know law school will challenge me with. I am so excited to do my thesis and I feel like getting to do something within my interest in political science and writing, with a touch of sociology, will be perfect at preparing me for the harder next steps I’ll take in my scholarly career.
