CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State University’s Forensics (speech and debate) Team attended the Scheller Forensics Invitational at Pacific University, Forest Grove, on Jan. 26-28, 2018.

The tournament drew over twenty schools from inside and outside the Northwest, including: Western Washington University, Bellingham; Carroll College, Helena, Mont.; and Boise State University. It was the third designated tournament of the Northwest Forensics Conference (NFC) season.

“Designated tournaments are highly competitive,” said Mark Porrovecchio, director of the team. “They are an excellent way to test how prepared we are for the upcoming national and international tournaments.”

Junior Kaden Meyers, a Political Science major from Sandy, was third best overall speaker and a quarterfinalist in Open IPDA Debate. He also competed in Open Impromptu Speaking and Open Extemporaneous Speaking.

“Meyers is proving to be a consistent leader on this team,” offered Porrovecchio. “His successes in debate are just a small part of how he helps mentor and guide the team.”

Sophomore Uwe Keist, a Political Science major from Corvallis, competed in Junior Impromptu Speaking, Junior Extemporaneous Speaking, and Junior IPDA Debate. Joining the team for the first time was Junior Luke Schindler, a Biology major from Lake Oswego. Schindler competed in Novice Impromptu Speaking.

The team was coached by graduate assistant Evan Steele of Concord, Calif. Steele is a MAIS student in the Speech Communication area of the School of Arts and Communication.

Next up, the team will host the 12th Annual Earl Wells Memorial Speakeasy on-campus in early February.

Celebrating its 125th season, OSU Forensics is one of the oldest clubs on campus and a member of the Performing Arts Board in the School of Arts and Communication. The team is open to all students in good academic standing regardless of experience or academic background. If you are a student interested in participating, or a member of the community who would like to support the team, please contact Porrovecchio at
