CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State University’s Forensics (speech and debate) Team attended the Greater Portland Intercollegiate Debate League (GPIDL) IPDA debate tournament at Mt. Hood Community College, Gresham, Ore., on March 2, 2018.
The tournament, which provides Northwest colleges and universities with a chance to compete in debate, featured schools that included Pacific University, Forest Grove.
Sophomore Uwe Keist, a Political Science major from Corvallis, was the best speaker and a gold medalist in Open IPDA Debate. Junior Kaden Meyers, a Political Science major from Sandy, was second best speaker in Open IPDA Debate.
“Meyers and Keist set a high standard for the rest of the team,” said Mark Porrovecchio, director of the team. “There is a reason they were chosen to represent us at the international and national competitions later this season.”
The team was coached by graduate assistant Evan Steele of Concord, Calif. Steele is a MAIS student in the Speech Communication area of the School of Arts and Communication.
“GPIDL tournaments are an asset to the Northwest,” continued Porrovecchio. “They are a stress-free way to hone your debate skills.”
Celebrating its 125th season, OSU Forensics is one of the oldest clubs on campus and a member of the Performing Arts Board in the School of Arts and Communication. The team is open to all students in good academic standing regardless of experience or academic background. If you are a student interested in participating, or a member of the community who would like to support the team, please contact Porrovecchio at mark.porrovecchio@oregonstate.edu.
