CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State University’s Forensics (speech and debate) Team attended the Steve Hunt Classic on October 11-13, 2024, at Lewis & Clark College, Portland. This is the first designated Northwest Forensics Conference (NFC) tournament of the season.

The tournaments featured over thirty schools from across the Northwest and beyond, including Boise State University, Idaho; Whitworth University, Spokane, Wash.; San Jose State University, Calif.; the University of Rochester, New York; and the University of Vermont, Burlington.

At the Steve Hunt Classic, Junior Joshua Giacomini, a Microbiology major from Coos Bay, was an Octofinalist in Open IPDA Debate and also competed in Open Impromptu Speaking. Junior Adam Moeglein, a Computer Science major from Ashland, was sixth best speaker in Junior IPDA Debate and also competed in Junior Impromptu Speaking.

“I’m proud of Joshua and Adam,” said Mark Porrovecchio, director of the team. “They worked really hard and were facing some of the best regional and national debate competitors.”

Other team members attending the tournament included Senior Emerson Pearson, a Political Science major from Beaverton, who competed in Open Impromptu Speaking and Open IPDA Debate; Senior Dylan Perfect, a Political Science major from Albany, who competed in Novice Impromptu Speaking; and Sophomore Caden Hooper, a Biochemistry/Molecular Biology major from Monmouth, who competed in Novice Impromptu Speaking.

The team was coached by assistant coach Megan Baus from Salem. Baus is a former student competitor for OSU and a current MAIS graduate student in the Speech Communication area of the School of Communication.

The Lewis and Clark tournament is a great start to the season,” continued Porrovecchio.  “It was nice to bring a mix of talented veterans and newcomers. We’ll take what we learned and use it as the season progresses.”

Celebrating its 132nd season, OSU Forensics is one of the oldest clubs on campus and a member of the Performing Arts Board in the School of Communication.  The team is open to all students in good academic standing regardless of experience or academic background.  If you are a student interested in participating, or a member of the community who would like to support the team, please contact Porrovecchio at [email protected].
