CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State University’s Forensics (speech and debate) Team competed in the That Forensics Magic Forensics Tournament, hosted by Bowling Green University, Bowling Green, Ohio, on Feb. 22, 2025. The tournament was a virtual/online competition.

Sophomore Veronica Robinson, a Psychology major from Portland, took second place in Open IPDA Debate.

“Veronica is an emerging talent on the team,” said Mark Porrovecchio, director of the team. “It was nice to see her end the regular season on such a positive note.”

The tournament featured dozens of schools from across the United States, including the University of Pittsburgh, Penn.; the University of Texas-Dallas; Emerson College, Boston, Mass., and the University of Illinois Chicago.

Also attending the tournament were Senior Emerson Pearson, a Political Science major from Beaverton; Senior Dylan Perfect, a Political Science major from Albany; and Freshman Ellie Lucas, a Sociology major from Salem. Emerson competed in Open IPDA Debate, while Dylan and Ellie competed in Novice IPDA Debate.

The team was coached by graduate student Megan Baus from Salem. Baus is a former competitor for OSU and a current MAIS graduate student in the Speech Communication area of the School of Communication.

“This virtual tournament was a great way to compete against schools from across the country,” continued Porrovecchio. “The students appreciated the chance to debate schools with different styles.”

Celebrating its 132nd season, OSU Forensics is one of the oldest clubs on campus and a member of the Performing Arts Board in the School of Communication. The team is open to all students in good academic standing regardless of experience or academic background. If you are a student interested in participating, or a member of the community who would like to support the team, please contact Porrovecchio at [email protected].
