OSU Bands Concerto Competition 


Are you working on a concerto in your lessons and want an opportunity to solo with either the Oregon State University Wind Ensemble or Wind Symphony at an upcoming concert in 2022? The OSU band program is proud to announce the first annual concerto competition, being held during spring 2021. Students will compete for the opportunity to perform a solo work live with the OSU Wind Ensemble or Wind Symphony during the Spring 2022 quarter.

Two winners will be selected:

  • One winner at the advanced level (a grade 5-6 concerto) to perform with the OSU Wind Ensemble. 
  • One winner at the intermediate level (a grade 3-4 concerto) to perform with the OSU Wind Symphony). 

Competition details

Eligibility: Open to all current woodwind, brass, percussion and piano music majors or minors currently enrolled at Oregon State University. Concerto entries can also be groups such a duets, trio, quartets and quintets.

Repertoire guidelines: 

  • The work must be easily obtainable (either through purchase or rental).
  • Can be an original work or a transcription.
  • 10-20 minutes in length.

Grade level for the concerto must be either advanced (grade 5-6) or intermediate (grade 3-4). If you are unsure of the grade level, please speak with Dr. Erik Leung or Olin Hannum.


Registration and dates

Online Registration will open on April 1, 2021 and will close April 15, 2021.

The competition will be held over two days, and will be open to the public via Zoom:

  • Thursday June 9, 2021: Intermediate-level concerto auditions
  • Friday June 10, 2021: Advanced-level concerto auditions
