Deann Garcia holds a BFA in Applied Visual Arts from Oregon State University (2006) and an MA in Sustainable Design from MCAD (2015). Focusing on visual story telling related to the human effects of climate change, she seeks to influence the design field to consider sustainability frameworks and circular economies in professional applications. Her MA thesis analyzed the social and environmental effects of sports apparel production, producing recommendations for both garment design and marketing for the bicycle industry in an effort to increase the rate of active transportation among women. Prior to coming to Oregon State, Deann was a design leader in the outdoor industry, focusing on identity development, advertising and strategy for PNW brands. She uses a systems thinking framework paired with a design thinking lens when tackling sticky problems.
