Learning Outcomes for the English Major
Oregon State University majors in the English program should be able to:
1) Write effective arguments about a variety of literary and cultural texts.
2) Recognize and interpret a wide variety of texts and genres (whether literary,. cinematic, multi-media, or inter-cultural) using a range of theoretical and interpretive strategies, including close reading.
3) Use information literacy and new technologies to plan and conduct research appropriate to initial and advanced study in English.
4) Demonstrate the role of contexts in production, reception, and transmission of literary and cultural texts (across periods, histories, geographical/national spaces and cultural differences).
The English major has broad inter-disciplinary roots and modern traditions that make it an ideal major for a variety of challenging and rewarding career paths.
