Research/Career Interests

Gary Ferngren's research interests focus on the social history of ancient medicine, religion and ancient medicine, and the historical relationship of science to religion.

Background

  • He completed his undergraduate studies at Western Washington University (1964). He received his M.A. (1967) and Ph.D. (1973) degrees from the University of British Columbia. He has taught Greek and Roman history at Oregon State since 1970 and teaches regularly in the University Honors College.
  • Ferngren has received several awards for teaching, including the University's highest teaching prize, the Elizabeth Ritchie Award for Outstanding Teaching. Active in several national and international organizations, he has been a Vice President of the International Society of the History of Medicine, of which he currently serves as Associate General Secretary.
  • Ferngren was awarded an OSU Center for the Humanities Fellowship for Fall 2011 which was used to work on his latest book project on medicine and health-care in early Christianity.
  • Professor Ferngren has been named a University Honors College Eminent Professor for 2011.
