Laura Rice’s research interests have focused on cross-cultural relations, academic exchange and social justice in an international context. Holding the PhD in Comparative Literature, she has written on North Africa, gender, literacy, postcolonial literature and sustainable development. Her books include a special tri-lingual Anthology of Contemporary Tunisian Poetry, edited and translated with Karim Hamdy for Pacifica: Poetry International (2015), translations of Malika Mokeddem’s memoir My Men (U Nebraska Press, 2009) and her novel Century of Locusts, both co-translated with Karim Hamdy (U Nebraska Press, 2006), literary criticism, Of Irony and Empire: the Transcultural Invention of Contemporary North Africa (SUNY Press, 2007 and 2008) and Departures: Selected Writings of Isabelle Eberhardt, followed by critical essays on Eberhardt’s work, co-written and translated with Karim Hamdy (City Lights Press, 1994). Laura Rice has been Principal Investigator and key personnel on federal projects funded by The Department of Education, Department of State, WID & USAID, and NEH. Her grants and awards include support from Fulbright, NEH, the National Council on U.S.-Arab relations, the American Institute for Maghrebi Studies, the Bunting Institute (Radcliffe-Harvard), and the Burlington Northern Award for Faculty Excellence. The Center for Mark Twain Studies has awarded her a writer’s residency at Twain’s summer retreat, Quarry Farm, to work on her current book project, Unsung Hero: Cooney at Cornell, about her grandfather, Lawrence Joseph “Cooney” Rice, Jr. (September 2021).
