Psychology

Where are you from?

Wassup! I was born in Florida, raised in Texas, and then my moms and I moved to Oregon my senior year of high school. Out of the three, Oregon is the most awesome! I’m currently living on campus in Corvallis now and it’s sweet.

What drew you to psychology as your field of study?

I’ve been a summer camp counselor for the last couple of years, and through that experience I found what fulfillment felt like. I’ve always wanted to be a therapist, but the aspect of normal therapy wasn’t my “cup of tea.” When I heard about play therapy, therapy through play instead of dialogue, I was immediately drawn in, leading me to psychology as my field of study.

What has been your experience as a student of both the College of Liberal Arts and the Honors College?

Some of my favorite classes have been with the Honors College, especially Science and Ethics through Star Trek! My homework was watching Star Trek each week, pretty sick if you ask me! In class, we applied the thematic messages in the episode that represented science and ethics concerns, which was really interesting because some of those episodes are old yet entertaining.

Have you started your honors thesis? If yes, what’s the topic and/or focus of your research? If not, are you considering any ideas so far?

Currently my main idea is exploring how families playing board games, video games, or sports together can affect their family dynamic.

What have been some of your favorite classes taken?

Currently, one of my favorite classes taken is History of Beer; a general education, upper division course, that covers beer from 8,000 years ago up until now. We’ve gotten to visit the Oregon State brewery and listened to an Oregon State beer archivist speak about the oddities of beer commercials. My final essay will be written about the history of beer pong. Definitely one of my favorite classes!

What are you hoping to do after you graduate?

After I graduate, I’m hoping to attend graduate school to obtain a master's degree in mental health counseling.

How do you feel that your experience in CLA and HC is setting you up for success?

I feel that my experience in CLA and HC is teaching me a lot of life lessons through practical learning in my classes, as well as giving me additional avenues of learning, like Intro to Aviation: Ground School, to expand my repertoire.
