CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State University’s Forensics (speech and debate) Team attended the Steve Hunt Classic on October 7-9, 2022, at Lewis & Clark College, Portland. This was the first designated Northwest Forensics Conference (NFC) of the season and the first in-person tournament since March 2020.

Junior Madeline Braun, a Vocal Performance major from Missoula, Mont., took first place in Junior Impromptu Speaking, and was quarterfinalist in Junior IPDA Debate. Freshman Adam Moeglein, a Computer Science major from Ashland, took third place in Junior Impromptu Speaking and also competed in Junior IPDA Debate

“I am proud of Madeline and Adam,” said Mark Porrovecchio, director of the team. “This was Adam’s first collegiate tournament and only the second term that Madeline has actively competed for OSU.”

The tournament featured schools from across the Northwest and beyond, including Boise State University, Idaho; Whitworth University, Spokane, Wash.; the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; and The University of Mississippi, Oxford.

Senior Megan Baus, a Chemical Engineering major from Salem, also competed in Open Poetry Interpretation. Sophomore Rachel Woods, a Biology major from Portland, also attended to support her peers.

The team was coached by assistant coach Tasha Robinson from Hillsboro. Robinson is a former student competitor for OSU and a current MAIS graduate student in the Speech Communication area of the School of Communication.

“It was a wonderful to see so many students on the Lewis and Clark campus,” continued Porrovecchio.  “It also felt great having such a good showing at a competitive regional tournament.”

Celebrating its 130th season, OSU Forensics is one of the oldest clubs on campus and a member of the Performing Arts Board in the School of Communication.  The team is open to all students in good academic standing regardless of experience or academic background.  If you are a student interested in participating, or a member of the community who would like to support the team, please contact Porrovecchio at mark.porrovecchio@oregonstate.edu.
