Monday, October 27, 2025

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State University’s Forensics (speech and debate) Team attended the Jim McPherson Classic Forensics Tournament on October 25-26, 2025, at Whitworth University in Spokane, Wash. This is the second tournament of the season.

The tournaments featured a dozen schools from across the Northwest and beyond, including Carroll College, Helena, Mont.; Lower Columbia Community College, Longview, Wash.; and Lewis and Clark College, Portland.

First-year Myah Oswald, an Animal Science major from Boise, Idaho, was third place in Novice Impromptu Speaking, and Best Speaker and a Semi-Finalist in Novice IPDA Debate. Senior Veronica Robinson, a Psychology major from Portland, was a non-advancing Octo-Finalist in Open IPDA Debate and also competed in Open Impromptu Speaking.

“It was nice to see Myah and Veronica excel at the tournament,” said Mark Porrovecchio, director of the team. “They continue to impress this season.”

The team was coached by assistant coach Megan Baus from Salem. Baus is a former student competitor for OSU and a current MAIS graduate student in the Speech Communication area of the School of Communication.

“We are only two tournaments into the season,” continued Porrovecchio. “With Megan’s excellent coaching, I think we are primed for more success moving forward.”

Celebrating its 133rd season, OSU Forensics is one of the oldest clubs on campus and a member of the Performing Arts Board in the School of Communication. The team is open to all students in good academic standing regardless of experience or academic background. If you are a student interested in participating, or a member of the community who would like to support the team, please contact Porrovecchio at [email protected].
