CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State University’s Forensics (speech and debate) Team attended the Clark and Rae Peters Invitational Forensics Tournament on October 26-27, 2024, at Pacific University, Forest Grove.

The tournament featured schools from across the Northwest Forensics Conference (NFC), including Whitworth University, Spokane, Wash.; Lewis and Clark College, Portland; and Lower Columbia College, Longview, Wash., and Lewis-Clark State College, Lewiston, Idaho.

Senior Emerson Pearson, a Political Science major from Beaverton, took second place in Open Impromptu Speaking and was a silver medalist in Open IPDA Debate. Junior Joshua Giacomini, a Microbiology major from Coos Bay, was a gold medalist and seventh best speaker in Open IPDA Debate. He also competed in Open Impromptu Speaking. Senior Dylan Perfect, a Political Science major from Albany, was a bronze medalist and fifth best speaker in Novice IPDA Debate and competed in Novice Impromptu Speaking. Freshman Alyssa Crook, a Business Administration major from North Bend, was first place in Novice Prose.

“I am impressed with how well they all did,” said Mark Porrovecchio, director of the team. “We had seasoned veterans like Emerson and Josh being recognized alongside newcomers like Dylan and Alyssa.”

Also competing at the tournament was Junior Adam Moeglein, a Computer Science major from Ashland, who competed in Open IPDA Debate and Open Impromptu Speaking.

The team was coached by graduate assistant Megan Baus from Salem. Baus is a former student competitor for OSU and a current MAIS graduate student in the Speech Communication area of the School of Communication.

“This was only our second tournament of the season,” continued Porrovecchio.  “I think we will be able to build on these successes moving forward.”

Celebrating its 132nd season, OSU Forensics is one of the oldest clubs on campus and a member of the Performing Arts Board in the School of Communication.  The team is open to all students in good academic standing regardless of experience or academic background.  If you are a student interested in participating, or a member of the community who would like to support the team, please contact Porrovecchio at [email protected].
