Undergraduate Communication

The communication undergraduate program is focused on developing and enhancing students' communication skills through speeches and presentations, while studying communication concepts.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the program, students will meet the following learning outcomes:

  • Interpret and evaluate the various theoretical underpinnings of human communication.
  • Develop research on the social, cultural, and historical significance of human communication using qualitative and/or quantitative approaches.
  • Integrate human communication concepts into both personal and public practices.

Undergraduate Degree(s) Offered

Communication majors must complete 48 credit hours (including 9 credits from the prerequisite core). A minimum 2.0 GPA is required on major coursework, including the prerequisite core.

  • COMM 111 Public Speaking (3)
  • COMM 114 Argument and Critical Discourse (3)
  • COMM 218 Interpersonal Communication (3)

  • Organizational Communication
  • Small Group Communication
  • Intercultural Communication
  • Negotiation and Mediation
  • Health Communication

 

Students minoring in Communication must complete 27 credits, 18 of which must be upper division.

Please note: 3 credits must be at the 400 level. Variable credit courses (COMM 350, COMM 40X, COMM 410) may not be used toward completion of the minor. Courses used for the minor must be taken for a letter grade. A minimum GPA of 2.0 must be earned in Communication coursework.

  • COMM 218 Interpersonal Communication (3)

Also required, either

  • COMM 320 Introduction to Rhetorical Theory (3)
  • COMM 321 Introduction to Communication Theory (3)

Upper Division Electives (15 credits)
Comm minors complete 15 upper division elective credit hours.

Note: 3 credit hours must be at the 400 level. Variable credit hours (COMM 350, COMM 40X, COMM 410) do not count toward the minor. No additional lower division elective credits are allowed for the minor.
