Biography

I have a Ph.D. and an M.A. in Language, Literacy, and Composition Studies from the University of California Santa Barbara. I also have an MA from Humboldt State University. For the last 15 years, I have worked full-time as an online teacher and curriculum developer centered on professional and technical writing. My work has been at Northern Arizona University, Western Oregon University, and Oregon State University. I specialize in teaching courses in grant writing and I work as a freelance grant writer in the summers, primarily focused on federal/international grants related to food security. I also teach Usability Studies, Technical Writing, and about 19 other courses in Prof/Tech writing at graduate and undergraduate levels.

Beyond OSU
Personal Interests: 

I love being a dad and teaching. I love "football" (soccer). I'm a former weekend hiker, who is aspiring to be a weekend hiker again! I love researching family histories. And as a teacher of professional and technical writing, it probably shouldn't be surprising that I love Writing Studies, including teaching and learning (curriculum development) related to writing. I am particularly interested in helping others appreciate how writing is foundational for coordinating all of our social actions toward shared goals within the systems we negotiate, build, and reinforce together. Through the study and practice of writing, I want my students to take up a "participatory approach" for becoming even more powerful producers and actors across the specialized disciplines and professions that they care about.
