Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Minor

The Minor in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies facilitates systematic study of feminist knowledge. It provides the exploration of gender as a focal point of analysis in determining differentials of power and opportunity, and recognizes the interaction of gender with a complex matrix of such fundamental categories as race, ethnicity, religion, class, sexual identity, age, physical appearance, and mental or physical ability. Students are expected to take the bulk of their coursework toward the Minor from core and elective courses offered by the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program. A total of 27 credits is required for the Minor, with at least 12 of these credits at the upper division level.  A grade point average of 2.0 is required and majors must earn a grade of C- in all WGSS courses.

Core Requirements (24 credits):

  • WGSS 223 (3) Women: Self and Society
  • WGSS 224 (3) Women: Personal and Social Change
  • WGSS 262 (3) Introduction to Queer Studies
  • WGSS 410 (3) Internship
  • WGSS 414 (4) Systems of Oppression in Women's Lives
  • WGSS 416 (4) Theories of Feminism
  • WGSS 480 (4) International Women

The remaining 3 credits may be taken from the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies electives and from approved program courses offered by other departments. An approved program course is one that has a focus on gender and/or women's issues, is taught in a unit other than the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program, and has been approved as fulfilling the requirements of a Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program Course.  In addition, WGSS 270 (3) Violence Against Women, WGSS 340 (4) Gender and Science, WGSS 430 (4) Women of Color Feminisms, and WGSS 4660 (4) Women and Sexuality may be taken as electives for the minor.  No more than 3 credits of WGSS 402 Independent Study and WGSS 410 Internship may count toward the Minor.

Program courses are subject to change based on availability and/or changes in content/focus.

We also offer an undergraduate minor in Queer Studies.
